Pressure washing is an effective and efficient method for cleaning various types of siding materials, including vinyl, stucco, wood, and Hardie board. It involves using a high-powered water spray to remove dirt, grime, mold, mildew, and other contaminants from the surface of the siding.
VINYL
When pressure washing vinyl siding, it's important to use a lower pressure setting to avoid damaging or denting the material. A pressure washer with a psi (pounds per square inch) rating of around 1,500 to 2,000 is generally suitable for vinyl siding. Using a wide-angle spray nozzle and working from the top down, the siding can be thoroughly cleaned, removing dirt and stains effectively.
STUCCO
Stucco siding can also benefit from pressure washing, but it requires a more cautious approach. Stucco is a porous material, so using excessive pressure can cause it to chip or crack. It's advisable to use a low to medium pressure setting and keep the nozzle a safe distance from the surface. Additionally, any loose or damaged stucco should be repaired before pressure washing to prevent water infiltration.
WOOD
For wood siding, pressure washing can help remove dirt, debris, and discolouration. However, it's crucial to exercise caution as high pressure can damage the wood fibers, leading to splintering or gouging. Using a lower pressure setting, typically between 1,200 to 1,500 psi, along with a wider spray pattern and holding the nozzle at a proper distance, can prevent such damage. After pressure washing, it's recommended to allow the wood to dry thoroughly and consider applying a fresh coat of protective finish or paint.
HARDIE BOARD
Hardie board siding, a popular fiber cement siding, is durable and can withstand pressure washing. It's essential to use a medium pressure setting, usually around 2,500 to 3,000 psi, along with a fan spray nozzle. This combination effectively removes dirt and grime without causing any harm to the siding. While pressure washing, pay attention to any gaps or seams in the Hardie board and avoid spraying water directly into them to prevent water intrusion.
